BIMCO to launch new Dry Bulk Cargo Network

Published: 18 December 2023

In an effort to bring BIMCO owner-members operating with dry bulk cargoes together in an environment where they can learn from each other, BIMCO is launching its next new network – the BIMCO Dry Bulk Cargo Network.

This network aims to bring together working professionals together in a friendly and informal setting, which allows them to have engaging conversations and discussions relating to the carriage requirements of dry bulk cargoes. As the scope of discussion can be wide-ranging, it will be driven solely by the composition of the network and the needs of the working professionals therein. However, in order to have a firm and sound footing in the discussions, we will primarily deal with first and foremost, understanding the regulatory framework that governs the carriage requirements of dry bulk cargoes, i.e. the International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes (IMSBC) Code.

Potential topics that have been identified for discussion in this network are as follows:

  • Shipper’s Cargo Information and Declaration
  • Cargo Shipping Name (BCSN), Proper Shipping Name (PSN)
  • Dangerous goods and non-dangerous goods in solid form in bulk
  • Materials hazardous only in bulk (MHB)
  • Materials harmful to the marine environment (HME)
  • MARPOL Annex V

The BIMCO Dry Bulk Cargo Network is expected to kick off its first online meeting in early February 2024 and each meeting is expected to last for 1 ½ hours. At the closure of the first meeting, the network members will have the opportunity to drive this network further by deciding on the next topic for discussion at the 2nd meeting. This network will meet 3- 4 times a year and all meetings are to be held online and operated under the Chatnam House rules. The meetings will neither be recorded nor minuted.
